The Christmas markets in the region
The reason we feature our Christmas markets in the Ruhr region on our website all year round is that they are truly beautiful and you should definitely plan your visit in advance. Besides the Duisburg Christmas market in the city center, which usually opens in the last week of November and runs until December 31st, there is an exclusive Christmas market in the Landschaftspark Nord (North Landscape Park) on a weekend in December.
In addition, there are the lovely markets at Centro Oberhausen, Dortmund, and of course Düsseldorf and Cologne. We are very centrally located in the heart of the Ruhr region, making all these markets easily and affordably accessible by S-Bahn (suburban train). Of course, the Duisburg Christmas market is the most beautiful in the area – not just because of the stalls, but also because of the people there. Don't just stick to Königstraße, though; venture further west: on Münzstraße, opposite Knüllermarkt (a decoration shop with incredible Christmas ideas), this alternative market is always worth a visit.
The Christmas lights market in Duisburg North, located in the Landschaftspark Nord (North Landscape Park), is something completely different. Against an industrial backdrop, the market creates an incredible atmosphere with dazzling lights and fantastic performers – definitely worth seeing. But be aware: the market only runs for one weekend and there's an entrance fee. You can find more information, such as current opening hours, on the website. www.weihnachtsmarkt-duisburg.com.
The Christmas markets in Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and Centro Oberhausen are, as already mentioned, also worth a visit. Düsseldorf, along with Dortmund, boasts one of the largest markets in the Ruhr region. Centro attracts visitors with its combination of free parking, the Centro shopping center, and a lovely Austrian Christmas market. But for a Duisburg native, nothing beats our own Christmas market.
